John Edwards: Politician and Savvy Speculator

We, at The Panelist, are trying to figure out which politicians to endorse for the upcoming 2008 elections. Luckily we have loads of time to make our decision and, sadly for their supporters, the candidates are starting ridiculously early. Previous Photo: stevegarfield, Creative Commons, Flickr

I have to say, I just trust a politician who is also a trader/speculator more than those who look to others to tell them what to do. I once heard Al Gore say, over lunch, that it was listening to his advisors who told him to tone down on the passion that lost him the election in 2000.

John Edwards is an investor in the hedge fund conglomerate Fortress. And Fortress owns a big chunk of Odyssey Marine Research (OMR – $6.85). As you can see detailed in this story by Brett Arends at TheStreet.com, that means John Edwards owns some shares of sunken treasure and pirate booty. Arrg. I am sure not one of of Mr. Edwards’ political advisors told him to invest in sunken treasure. Arrg. But as far as I’m concerned, I’m happy to call him “Edwards-No-Beard-the-Pirate,” arrg.

I’m not ready to suggest investing in Fortress alongside Edwards at this point, though I am watching these recently gone public IPO’s to see if owning a piece makes sense.

Disclosure: I’ve never been a pirate but I’ve always wanted to talk like one. Arrg. I do not own Odyssey Maring Research – nor do I consider it a value stock. Shiver-me-timbers I’ll stick with cheap stocks that have sustainable business models.

Notes on the Panelist Endorsement For President: John Edwards gets two points for investing in a hedge fund and one point for making me want to talk like a pirate. Arrg. Al Gore gets no points because he’s not running.
