Tread Lightly: EuroStar Going Greener but Still Not Making Money

According to a press release by EuroStar, the operator of trains crossing under the English Channel on their way between The Continent and Britain, Eurostar travel between Paris and London is ten times less polluting than flying. However, we at The Panelist are not just green but greedy too.

I love the Eurostar and The EuroTunnel (ETL.LON or TNU.EPA). It is my preferred method of travel between London and Paris. Being able to go from the middle of London to the middle of Paris without complicated check-in, a beautiful view and expensive long ground journeys to the airport is wonderful. Eurostar is also embarking on a great sustainability program called Tread Lightly to even further reduce their greenhouse emissions. But would I invest my money in this ongoing losing venture? No way. In general, I may keep my body in as many glamor ventures as possible but I keep my investment money far away. Way far.

Currently, Eurostar is going through another capital restructuring. It’s a bad deal for everyone since everyone is losing money, governments and investors. Well at least the earth is gaining. So, I’ll take the train and support Eurostar with my travel dollars but not my investment dollars.

Eurostar Ten Committments To The Environment

Shameful Disclosure (Pre-Conversion/Pre-Panelist Neubert): Here I am taking my not very environmentally friendly car from London to drive around the continent for a couple weeks back in the summer of 2001. Well, at least I paid for most of the cost of my environmental damage through highly taxed petrol (gasoline to us Yanks). The car got about 18 miles to the gallon normally and about 10 MPG going 140MPH on the Autobahn. The only thing green about me back then was my Birkenstocks.

Disclosure: I do not own any bonds, equity, preferred equity, coupons, or vouchers from Eurostar. I do have some exposure to French Government Debt in Euros. I am a member of the EuroStar Frequent Traveller Rewards Program.
